Post Operative Instructions for Fillings
Composite (tooth-colored resin) fillings and silver (amalgam) fillings
You may feel:
- Hot sensitivity that may last a few days
- Cold sensitivity that may last up to a few weeks but decreasing as the weeks go by
- Sensitivity to chewing
- Soreness from injection site
- Gum sensitivity
Composite fillings are hard and set up right away. You can chew on them immediately but be careful while you are still numb. Amalgam fillings are soft for the first 24 hours and need time to set up. During this 24 hour period, chew on the other side and try to stick with something soft. Do not floss in between your silver filling for the first 24 hours as the filling needs time to set. Once again, please be careful chewing while you are still numb.
After the numbing wears off, you may feel you are not biting correctly. Please call us so we can schedule a time for you to come in to adjust your bite.
